Our Classes
What is Gathered We Grow Farm School?
Children K-12th grade are invited to join Gathered We Grow Farm School where we teach practical life and educational skills in a local outdoor farm environment. Most classes are held bi-monthly. All classes are held outside, rain or shine! Every session includes several key features. An regular “Farm School” day looks like this:
1. Farm School Responsibilities and Animal Husbandry –tending to the student-maintained garden, learning about and tending to the animals on site (currently chickens, turkeys, and rabbits, but our farm is ever growing!)
2. Know & Tell Time – practicing the art of narration, public speaking and communication (based on principles by Karen Glass).
3. Literature Discussion (aka Book Club) – 2 to 3 middle grade novels are covered and discussed in depth over the course of a semester. Most books, in some way, relate to farm life.
4. Monthly Life Skill Training Focus – each month we focus on and teach one subject such as wood working, entrepreneurship via a student led “Maker’s Market,” canning and food preservation, botany/horticulture plant identification, navigation and compass skills, bushcraft techniques, etc. Current topics are already scheduled through the 2023-2024 school year. However, new topics will be added and updated for future semesters.
LUNCH and Free Time Break (bring your own main meal, although when our garden harvest is ready we will have farm-to-table snack options!)
5. Extracurricular add-ons such as music, language, art, and creative writing are optional *for an additional fee
